Hayaa ... Hayaa ... Loved Hong Kong!

So I am lazy par excellence, but this is definitely a new low. Never have I delayed a travel blog for over 4 weeks post return ( it was a week when I started it … and have been shamelessly editing the timelines ever since ).

Anyhow, my recent trip was an eye-opener to say the least. I am not a very prejudiced person in general, but once I develop them, I can be really obnoxious about my views. So the Chinese according to me were tiny, mean, robotic people, who ate all of Mother Nature’s creatures. Well, the latter does hold true .. but my former prejudices took a major hit!

The Chinese happen to be the living examples of the fact that awesome things come in small packages! They are amazingly friendly, extremely courteous, unbelievably nice hosts… and what always seemed like suspicious whispering on their part, is now soft spoken behavior in my eyes! (I have no middle path .. the pendulum of my emotions always stays in extremities it seems :( )

Hong Kong in itself is a beautiful place. I had gone expecting a concrete jungle (more pre-conceived notions.. sigh .. ), but in the midst of those tall buildings and shipyards, there were stretches of land that made you forget that you were in a city in the first place! The Hong Kong-ians have created tiny green havens amid the chaos that usually prevails in cities like these.

So while the airport is a concrete self-contained township, as you move out you see nothing but greenery and gorgeous mountain ranges. Just when your brain lulls you into believing you are in a heavenly hill station, BAM .. You get onto an intricately patterned bridge over the sea ..surrounded by hundreds of vessels in the dockyard … Soon the architecture that the city is famous for makes itself known to you, in the form of impossibly high buildings that disappear into the heavens above! Just loved the way there were surprises at every nook and corner!

Anyhow, the street on which our hotel was located was a really busy one (JUST like the China I had imagined :P ) .. There were jewelry stores all over the place, and extremele stinky medical stores that kept a lot of dried animal brains ( Don’t know what they were…but that’s what they looked like I swear…)

So, on Day 1, having landed at 6 in the morning, we had half a day to kill (post attending to sleep deprivation from the previous night). So off we went to our local “temple” .. the HSBC Center :D. This was the first HSBC building that had been set up .. with the majestic Stephen and Stit manning the entrance … just LOVED the sense of history associated with it all!

Next on the agenda was the Victoria Peak .. we had heard hat the view from up there is breathtaking. Alas, it was so foggy that day that all we did was freeze over in the dense mist that surrounded us! Though the tram ride to the top and back was truly breathtaking!

We had 1 weekend as usual to explore the place (16 hour workdays don’t leave you with much scope otherwise)… So off we went to Lantau Island in a cable car with a see-through bottom. The view was unbelievable as the trolley glided over land and sea … The view of the giant bronze statue of the Great Buddha which was the chief attraction gave me a weird thrill .It is so majestic and the place has such a mystical feel to it, that you feel completely cut off from the rest of the world. We climbed 200 stairs to see the Buddha up close. The view from the top was amazing as expected, but what really got to me was the sense of peace that prevailed there. It was as if silence had taken a dimension of its own, and the chaos outside could not touch you as long as you were there … One of the most beautiful experiences ever!

The next day however was devoted to shopping .. Nothing spiritual about that experience .. but highly satisfying nonetheless :) .. The Hong Kong Metro is totally unbelievable .. Just loved how there was end to end connectivity all over!

Our last day there was spent lunching with the team there (pretty sure I’ve eaten some poor animal accidentally ) .. and shopping in their Midnight Market ( a cross between Sarojini Nagar and Dilli Haat :D) … Just loved the goods and the bargaining there!

All in all it was an amazing trip … Whether it was the adorable Chinese babies .. or extremely helpful people (even when they didn’t know English!) .. .or the shopping expedition .. or the peace that I carried away in my heart from Lantau .. I loved every bit of my visit ! On top of it all, I got over my stupid prejudices .. what more could I have asked for :)

MNIK rocked! Why didn't people like it?

Finally saw MNIK ... after all the hype and Shiv Sena agitations... To top it all, a day before I got to watch it, I read some nasty comments about the movie on FB, and was seriously disheartened ... Was it all hype? Did Karan Johar reduce all the issues the promos had been screaming out for a month about ... to a frothy, bubble gummy romance?

Thankfully, I wasn't disappointed! The movie was about people who say what they mean and mean what they say ( Asperger's syndrome makes it pretty much impossible to be a hypocrite). The message wasn't anything unusual or unheard of ... There are 2 kinds of people in the world ... Good and Bad ... there isn't a third kind. But the way they portrayed it was truly soul stirring ... and SO relevant in today's world!

Rizwan Khan, the protagonist, is endearing ... and played convincingly by Shah Rukh... This is only the 2nd movie of his, where I forgot the King ... and remembered his character (The first being Chak De). To see such purity of being, such sincerity and genuineness, was indeed refreshing! I can't stress enough on the genuineness bit ... Having spent 19 months in the corporate world ... and having experienced first hand how every darn word can have 10 different meanings for 10 different people ... my soul got actually charged up during the movie I think ... Anyhow ... I'm digressing..

Frankly, I don't see why the triumph of the human soul against all odds is considered bull shit by people today... When they say "be practical" ... Do they mean that shut your 5 senses and follow the herd without asking questions? Why do the same people think that movies like "Ishqiya" and "Omkara" are practical and reflect "reality" ...

Maybe it's because everyone's "reality" is actually different ... Dawood's reality is drugs, Osama's is terror, mine is a world where people are awesome .. (which is why when a jackass turns up in my life ... it kills me ... he/she ruins my "reality"!)..

But at the end of it, no matter how our perceptions differ, the essential truths/values remain the same world over. Reality becomes no more than a debate between a person wearing rose-coloured glasses vs other colours! All we have to do is clean out our specs, remember that we are human beings ... and live life as honestly as possible, upholding the values that truly matter...

Only then will our realities overlap ... till then I can't really point a finger at you and vice versa ... our perceptions are too clouded for that...

Punjabi by Nature!

Recently concluded a 4 day trip to the Bhangra land! WHAT a revelation it was!

We hired an Innova and took off by road last Saturday. For the first time in ages the entire family was going on a trip together!

The final destination was Amritsar, but we stopped over at Chandigarh for a night enroute. Chandigarh = Sector 17 Market in our family's psyche :D ... So that's the one and only place that we visited there before retiring for the day.

The next day we started off for Amritsar. It was Brilliant! I can't put it down to any one thing...but as you go Northwards in our country... the more cheerful people seem to become...there is a general enthusiasm in the air... the green fields... golden flowers... sun shine ... and most importantly lots and lots of Sardarjis! Their jovial spirit just shines through!

When we finally reached Amritsar around 3 in the afternoon, we started marking out our things to eat list... The deal is...in this city each delicacy is associated with one particular dhaba/konewaali dukaan. So while punjaabi food was awesome in Kaisar da Dhaba...Poori Aaloos and lassi were heavenly at Kanhaiyalal's. Then there was a hatti dedicated to jalebis, and a totally different one for gulaab jamuns! It was my own private heaven! Kaali daal was lost in pools of desi ghee, and lassi in chunks of white butter and malai. After ages, I forgot all about my sagging tummy and enjoyed each morsel of food. My extremely fat conscious family totally followed suit!

Apart from the food, the pace itself was amazing! The Golden temple is gorgeous and you feel totally at peace there. Then of course, there's Jallianwala Bagh .. a stark reminder of our days under the British rule... with the bullet holes marked out on each wall, and a shrine of sort made out of the historic well that claimed dozens of lives as people tried to save themselves from Dyer's bullets... The narrow pathway that Dyre used to enter the park ... the blood red roses that are today blossoming in the soil that had absorbed the blood of hundreds of Indians that fateful day in April 1919... it affects you in myriad ways...

We were lucky enough to be able to witness the evening ceremony at Wagah too..up close! The Indian crowds thronged "our side" of Wagah...patriotic songs blared from giant speakers... Shouts of "India Zindabad" and "Vande Mataram" rang in the air.

The Pakistani side hardly had any viewers compared to our massive turnout... And men and women were seated on opposite sides. Though soon the enthusiasm grew there too.. and shouts of "Jeevhe Jeevhe Pakistan" intermingled with "Vande Mataram" ... Their speakers blared their patriotic songs!

Then the soldiers started their march... the gates were thrown open...and I got my first glimpse of the place my heart calls my own! They were just like us...and I wished we could applaud Pakistan, and in return.. they would do the same for us... We were one country... we have a common language... my ancestors are from there... some of there's may have been from here... I saw an old lady sitting up front in their VIP section looking excitedly across the border... she reminded me of my own grandmom... who knows... maybe they know each other too from their youth...

Alas... didn't really get a chance to interact with them ... and just as the ceremony had started... it ended all too quickly (after some pompous display of marching and kicking sequences by soldiers on both sides) ... the flags were brought down at sunset... and the gates were shut again...

It was one helluva trip ... and not just because of the things we witnessed or ate! The spirit of Punjab is unlike anything I've seen in other parts of the country. You will never find a Sardar beggar... because they always work for their living... and go a million steps ahead of us .. because they take immense pride in what they do. So a labourer working on a building, a fruit seller or a businessman... they all will be fair and rosy ... looking like they own the place... and believing that they are doing the greatest work on earth ... That kind of inner satisfaction is so hard to find in our city!

A girl recently asked me why I remained happy all the time... told her the secret... A dash of Punjaabi genes can probably do your genetic make up a lot of good :))

Magical 2010

Happy New Year folks! I LOVE this time of the year...Mostly because it's holiday season :) ... But also because I love starting afresh in my head !

So 1st of January...Birthdays...Hindu New Year...Diwali...I need a reason to take out a new diary and list a new set of resolutions...For the same reason I adored that scene in Bruce Almighty...when God and Bruce take up a mop and sweep the floor clean...symbolizing an end to the mess created by Bruce and a restoration of order...New beginnings... They give me that warm fuzzy feeling one gets after watching a romantic comedy...it's just the best!

So if I didn't stick to my morning walks in December and became half-Santa...1st Jan is when I make amends and start my routine again ! Of course... it's all in the head...but you can't get yourself to get this excited on say a 14th of June...unless it's your birthday or something!

Anyhow...before I start sounding nuts (if I haven't already...it's the warm fuzzy feeling that is responsible) ... I will bring an end to this...

Somehow I feel this year will be different...how ... why... what... no clue... maybe I just feel this at the start of every year :)

Have a Magical 2010 everyone...believe it...and it shall happen...
